Companion Animals

Companion AnimalsWSPA’s companion animal programme seeks to address the suffering of companion animals.

With millions of animals under the control of humans worldwide, it is one of the most visible animal welfare issues today.

WSPA’s work  is primarily concerned with three groups of animals:

  • Stray animals who endure persecution, disease and starvation across the globe.

  • Working equines that are forced to work despite malnutrition, injury and little or no veterinary care.

  • Pet animals who lack the basic requirements for a comfortable life.

A truly global concern

Globally there are some 600 million dogs, and a similar number of cats, of which an estimated 80% are stray or unwanted.

WSPA aims to reduce the number of stray animals and combat inhumane treatment through its stray control projects.

Horses and donkeys are a vital form of transport for millions of people and their goods.

Throughout the world WSPA is seeking to ensure that working animals are provided with adequate food and water, veterinary support and farriery care.

WSPA aims to show that taking proper care of working animals is in the best interests of both animals and their owners.

Through a range of projects, WSPA is working to ensure that individuals responsible for working animals know how to care for them correctly and have the right equipment for the tasks undertaken.
