Volunteers Opportunities

WSPA Member Societies sometimes require volunteer assistance from people with specific skills, from teaching to campaigning and veterinary expertise.

If you wish to volunteer for a Member Society, write to us or visit this page regularly for the latest volunteer positions as they become available.

The Bali Street Dog Foundation, also known as Yudisthira, was established to provide veterinary treatment to the island‘s street dogs and reduce their numbers through a catch, neuter/spay and release progreamme. The Foundation also conducts highly effective public education and veterinary training aimed at improving welfare in Bali in the long-term.

PhaNgan Animal Care aims to greatly improve the quality of life of PhaNgan’s animals by providing emergency relief and nursing care for all minor illnesses and injuries, while controlling the population growth of dogs and cats through neutering.

Volunteering at PhaNgan Animal Care is a unique opportunity to make the most of your time abroad: involve yourself fully in the daily life of a Thai island; get to know a delightful breed of animal; become fully involved in the healing processes of our patients; and experience the immense satisfaction of a previously ill animal, returning home healthy.

Clinic Assistant
The work involves assisting PAC’s two nurses and Administrator in the daily running of the clinic, to monitor and ensure the comfort of our hospitalised patients. This is applicable for volunteers staying a minimum of 2 months.

Vets, Vet Nurses, Vet Students
Use your veterinary or nursing skills to continue the neutering program, and provide assistance to surgical or difficult medical cases.

The Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF)

logo

The Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF) seeks to promote and improve elephant welfare in Sri Lanka by encouraging the conservation of Sri Lanka‘s threatened elephant population and compassionate elephant ownership.

The input of volunteers is extremely important for the daily running of the Millennium Elephant Foundation.

Mobile Veterinary Unit
The Foundation has developed the first Mobile Veterinary Unit in Sri Lanka. The unit travels through out Sri Lanka administering treatment to any needy elephant.

The volunteer will travel with the unit and the attending vet, as well as working with our in house vet attending to the daily care and treatment of the elderly and disabled elephants housed at the Foundation.

Teaching English
Volunteers are needed to contribute to the MEF’s teaching English program which caters primarily to adults and children from the local village of Randeniya.

The teaching English program is one of the MEF‘s most rewarding programs and offers volunteers maximum interaction with the local community.

Charity Work
Volunteers are needed for fundraising, increasing awareness of the MEF’s goals and public relations.

This work is fundamental to the ongoing work of the charity and may include letter writing campaigns, maintaining membership records, preparing the quarterly newsletter and the upkeep of this website.

Sociedad Protectora De Animales Scooby

logo

Sociedad Protectora De Animales Scooby is the leading association dealing with the rescue of Galgo dogs in Spain.

Gaglo dogs suffer from uncontrolled breeding in Spain and then massive abandoning at the end of the hunting season. Scooby rescues galgos, houses them at their shelter and tries to find them all a new home.

Shelter Support
Scooby welcomes volunteers from all over the world. Whether it is short or long term, volunteers are needed to help in the preparing of food, feeding the dogs, cleaning the paddocks, providing the dogs with attention, and the many other jobs that come with working at a shelter. Any help is welcome.

Vets
Scooby also welcomes the expertise of veterinarians and vet technicians.

The Kismet Account

The Kismet Account
is seeking volunteer vets and nurses for spaying trips taking place this year and next. We help local associations and charities by carrying out carefully planned and locally integrated feral cat control programmes and also assisting responsible animal shelters with boosting their neutering.

The Kismet Account also runs training projects for local authorities, vets and rescue volunteers in charities in other countries.

Vets and Nurses

Trips will normally be for 10 days. Accommodation and lifts (abroad) are provided but not flight costs.

  • November 2008 - 1st to 10th -NW Portugal, Vets, Nurses and Trappers needed for both feral cat neutering and shelter neutering (fly into Porto)
  • Jan 2009 - flexible dates - NW Portugal - feral cat neutering - experienced vets and nurses (fly from Stansted or Liverpool into Porto).

To join a project as a vet you should have at least 18 months postgraduate small animal practice experience.

You need to be a member of the RCVS or of the local College or Order in the country we are visiting.

Nurses should be qualified as VNs or have worked in a substantial nursing role for at least 2 years.

Trappers should be either VNs or have worked in rescue charities, as animal wardens / inspectors, etc.

We are currently not able to offer placements to vet students, MRCVS candidates or those without relevant professional experience on projects dealing with feral animals.

We occasionally also need vets and nurses to help on training projects which aim to equip and teach local volunteers and vets who have little experience in neutering stray animals.

For this project you will need to be slightly more experienced, ideally have travelled and possess good communication skills. It is likely that around 70% of the airfare will be provided, along with accommodation.

To apply please visit www.kismetaccount.org.uk Submit your application via email using the downloadable volunteer form only. Please note they do not accept CVs or text messages.
