25 Years of Influence
Influencing through education Education has always been the lynchpin of WSPA’s work; we aim to inform, educate and influence all levels of society. Our comprehensive humane education programme introduced into Costa Rican primary schools in 1989, with the co-operation of the Costa Rican government, has been an outstanding success. The programme is now being introduced to four more countries. Our Kindness Club programmes are now available in 25 countries throughout Africa; hundreds of thousands of children who have been through the programme have learned to care and respect the animals they share their lives with. Concepts in Animal Welfare, an innovative WSPA animal welfare training syllabus aimed at veterinary schools and universities, has been sent to more than 700 universities worldwide and is currently being used in 12 countries. Believing that credible, properly enforced legal protection is essential to the protection of all animals throughout the world, we strive to influence governments to introduce legislation that frees animals from lives of suffering and cruelty. WSPA was instrumental in Korea passing its Protection of Animals Act; and in the Taiwanese Government passing its first animal protection law in 1997. Through our FarmWatch campaign we promote sustainable and humane farming alternatives believing that the majority of industrial animal farming practices are unsustainable, detrimental to the environment and cause immense pain and suffering to the animals involved.
