
September 2009: WSPA has been awarded ‘Defenzoor of the Year’, a prominent annual prize given to an animal welfare or animal protection organisation making a significant contribution to animal welfare in Latin America.
July 2009: The ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States and United Animal Nations assisted in the rescue of 407 dogs from multiple organised dog fighting rings.

May 2009: When ORCA (Organisation for Respect and Care for Animals) and the RSPCA met with the Serbian president, he pledged support for the development of a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare.

March 2009: The Humane Society of Grand Bahama is successfully helping the island's dogs and cats through a combination of spay/neuter clinics, owner education and an adoption programme.

December 2008: Wasaka is one of the cubs receiving medical attention and months of dedicated care to prepare him for a wild life at the Idaho Black Bear Rehab centre, a WSPA member society.

November 2008: A US$25 million prize is being offered for the development of a safe, non-surgical, single-dose sterilization method for male and female cats and dogs.

October 2008: Save the Brumbies Inc, a WSPA member society that seeks to protect wild horses from slaughter, made a huge step for wild horse welfare by opening a 1,400 acre sanctuary.

October 2008: Member society Yudisthira took theatre and photography to the streets of Bali, raising awareness about the negative effects of factory farming and live animal markets on animal welfare and human health.

April 2008: GAIA, based in Belgium, worked with fellow animal welfare groups to pressure the Flemish government to ban the shooting of cats from 2010.

March 2008: Russian member society VITA was part of a wave of protests which saw a ban placed on the hunting of baby seals in 2008.

January 2008: WSPA member society Network for Animals is helping to reverse the trend for dog meat in the Philippines, which currently causes inhumane death for many animals.
