Last month, representatives of WSPA member societies ORCA (Organisation for Respect and Care for Animals) and the RSPCA met with Serbian president Boris Tadic, who pledged his support for the development of a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare.
At the meeting, Saša Dragin, Serbian Minister for Agriculture, officially signed the ‘Animals Matter to Me’ petition in support of a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare while ORCA’s representatives, who organised and attended both meetings with the president and the minister, looked on.
Both member societies were pivotal in achieving this breakthrough support for animal welfare in the region.
The country’s first animal welfare framework law comes into effect this month. After the adoption of this law, Serbia – a potential EU candidate state – will adopt the full EU legal framework on animal welfare into their national legislation.
To date, WSPA’s campaign to see animal welfare recognised as an issue of worldwide concern – and enshrined in a declaration at the United Nations – has been endorsed by the governments of Cambodia, Fiji, New Zealand, Palau, the Seychelles, Switzerland and the 27 member states of the European Union.
