Arrest of Greenpeace activists in Japan

Japanese police have arrested two Greenpeace activists for exposing a whale meat scandal involving the government-sponsored ‘scientific’ whaling programme.

The two activists are being investigated for allegedly stealing a box of whale meat which they presented as evidence. Greenpeace asserts that their very public and forceful arrest has been an exercise in protection of the whaling industry and is demanding the release of its staff.

WSPA believes that Japan’s inherently cruel whaling must stop and urges the Japanese government to conduct an independent scientific enquiry into the welfare of hunted whales.
